Three days after finishing my last classe I have two great jobs…

When I started my education at Sprott Shaw I wasn’t sure what to expect or how I would do in class. I quickly discovered that getting my education here was lots of hard work but also lots of fun. All the other students and staff here were always helpful and ready to lend a hand. At the end of my 11 month CSW course I graduated with an honours diploma as well as all the skills needed to go out into the field and start working. Three days after finishing my last classe I have two great jobs doing what I love, working with and helping people.

Thanks Sprott Shaw for all you have done to help get me on the road to success.

The Secret of Getting in the Door

A common question people have when they are building their career is how to get employers to talk to them. There are always going to be jobs available, even in this economy, but the question you have to ask yourself is, “Am I the BEST person for this job?”

Many people also wonder how to get the boss to listen to them or take notice.

The secret answer is…

It is not about you.

That’s right, you are not the most important person when it comes to the eyes of your current or future boss. THEY are the most important person in their mind. So why do you bore them with, “Oh look what I have done and how special I am?”

When trying to get in the door, think about who you are going to see and what might be important to them. Have you heard of a little thing called Google? Do some research.

  • Who are you meeting with?
  • What does the company stand for?
  • What is their vision?
  • Who are their customers?
  • What words and phrases do they use?

If you start with this basic formula in mind and then re-tool your resume to match what is important to THEM, you have a much better chance of getting in the door.

Approximately 80% of all jobs available are in the hidden job market, however most people only look at the jobs they can find in the paper or online.

Here is a quick psychology lesson:

The favorite word that people love to hear is “YOU.”

  • YOU are special
  • I am glad to meet YOU
  • It was a pleasure doing business with YOU

Now, combine YOU with the word BECAUSE and you will increase cooperation immediately.

  • YOU are special BECAUSE you have the ability to make people feel comfortable.
  • I am glad to meet YOU BECAUSE I have heard what great things YOU have done with the business.
  • It was a pleasure doing business with YOU BECAUSE of the way YOU can easily identify solutions.

Do you see the difference?

Combine the research technique above with the psychology of YOU-BECAUSE and you will see much better results.

Or you can continue to send out 50 resumes that look the same and hope they stick.

Career CenterSprott Shaw Community College, in partnership with our affiliated colleges and training institutions, has created the Global Career Centre (GCC). This centre’s mandate is to find employment for currently-enrolled students who require part-time jobs, and for our graduates who are seeking job and career opportunities.

To achieve this goal, employers with job opportunities and students seeking employment register with the Centre on-line. So, if you are looking for employment, it’s as simple as going to our GCC website, grabagrad.com, and clicking on “Students and Graduates” on the upper right side of the screen to register.

The jobs are out there. In July, 2011, for example, the Centre had 3200 job postings. You’ll find GCC staff friendly, helpful, and attentive. Happy job hunting!

Your staff’s contributions to my studies are greatly appreciated. I would like to thank Ed, Jeanette, Jaime, and Laurie. I came into my program with anxiety, wondering whether or not I would be able to handle my work load. My instructors from each class were very understanding and helpful. Any questions I had they answered eagerly, and patiently.

Their assistance has been invaluable during my journey at Sprott-Shaw Community College. I greatly appreciate their generosity.

I’ll remember my time here with great pleasure.

Sincerely yours

Hello everyone,

Thank you for all the support, guidance and teaching you have given me as an ECE student. Now, that I have completed the program I am proud and fortunate that I chose Sprott-Shaw Community College as my campus to study and have this certificate. You all
have prepared me to become an excellent Early Childhood Educator and that is what I am going to be and now that I am starting my career at my third practicum facility I am thrilled and happy to just do what I love to do! Being with the children and providing quality child care that children deserve. Once again, thank you so much for everything!

Keep up all your good work! More power to ECE faculty!

I remember my first day of school like it was yesterday. I walked around in circles, getting lost, feeling so overwhelmed. After several long years being out of school, here I am again. It took some getting used to, and for the first few months I felt lost but with time I found my place in school again and it was a good one. I made some awesome friends, connected with some cool teachers, and actually enjoyed learning.

I also feel like I did a lot of growing in those seven months. I went from a fairly shy arid unsure lady to a confident person who was not afraid to speak out. I learned some valuable lessons about life that can really apply to anything.

It seemed so far away. I worked really hard. I had long days as I went to school full time and worked full time. Never had a day to myself. Well. I finally made it. I have now graduated as a Health Care Assistant (HCA), and it was worth the wait. I am excited what to do now with my life. I have so much more to look forward too. I have changed my life. I am starting to see what I am going to be like in the future and I love it. All I have to do is get a job.

It’s funny how just when I was really starting to feel comfy in a stable in my school environment, it was already time to start thinking about graduation. It’s crazy just how fast those seven months went by, way back on my first day I never ever thought I would be saying these words. And lastly, in order to achieve ones goal remember hard working + determination = success.

“As I was going through my program, I found it was very interesting and made me more confident at school.”

I have been living in Canada for 12 years and I felt I needed a better job and a step forward in my life. So I decided to go to [a college] in Surrey to take a Community Support Worker Program. Unfortunately it did not work out because I had to go back to Fiji for a family funeral. When I got back from Fiji, [the other college] did not allow me to continue with my education. So I
had to find a different school. I found Sprott-Shaw Community College by reading an article.

I talked to a program advisor and I enrolled in Resident Care Attendant Program. At first, it was very difficult and challenging for me, but I made an effort to study for 4-5 hours everyday. As I was going through my program, I found it was very interesting and made me more confident at school. The thing I like the most is that we have a daily quiz and final assessment every second Friday. I have studied a lot to get good marks. I really want to thank my instructor, Kathlyn. She guided me throughout my program and helped me to be a successful resident care attendant.
