My Successful Story of HCA
I enrolled HCA program because of my background in nursing. I chose Sprott-Shaw Community College due to their excellent standard quality of education. HCA program was designed to provide us with opportunities to develop knowledge, skills and good communication. To function as a front care giver of long term settings which include both resident care facilities and home support agencies. Now that I finished HCA I became knowledgeable and ready to apply my theories and my practicum together, using my gentle care approach to elderly and disabled persons. I can provide a variety of services to assist resident need’s which including bathing, ROM, personal care needs, toileting and oral hygiene etc. I can handle physical demands of the work including proper using of ceilings, standing, full, manual and mechanical lift and position patients or residents, walking use of retrain and aggressive behaviour management practice.

“A Special Thank you to my Instructor and the Staff at SSCC”
My name is Alison; a former student of Sprott-Shaw Community College – Abbotsford. When I came to Sprott-Shaw I had an idea of what I wanted to do and that was work with Youth At Risk. However, I had no idea how I was going to afford the schooling to do it. I was one year divorced, had a daughter, had to sell my business and took a loss and because I was a business owner and I was not qualified for EI or welfare. I signed up for the local University but felt very overwhelmed with everything it required to get courses. I had been out of school for 18 years already. Upon searching Community Colleges I came across SSCC – Social Services Course. After going for an interview and checking out the course I felt this would help me in the direction I wanted to take. I had worked with the Mentally and Physically Challenged when I was younger for many years but did not have any schooling to back it up and now a days you need certification. I always knew I could fall back on this training. After gathering everything I need to enter Sprott-Shaw, they helped me obtain a student loan. I was set.
First day of school I found myself quite nervous. I thought I was going to be in a class with young students out of high school. I was wrong. I met a great group of friends who were all in similar situations as me. I have never enjoyed school as much as I enjoyed this course. and the friends I made. I had the most amazing teacher (Shirley) who knew the material and was extremely knowledgeable in counselling. Which I found to be huge relief as I was worried that the money I spent would be on a teacher that was just teaching the lesson plan.
I really found myself in the year that I was there. The instructors pushed us to do our best and to put effort and dedication into what we were learning. I managed to land some really great practicum’s where I was able to show off my abilities and when the end of school neared the graduate services officer was right there helping get resumes and job postings.
With my back ground and current schooling, I managed to obtain the job I was going after.
Thank You Sprott-Shaw, I am forever grateful. It was money well spent!

Graduate Publishes Childrens Books
The Instructors and Staff of our New Westminster campus and Early Childhood Education program were proud to hear that one of our graduates, Carla VanKoughnett, is also now an author, publishing not one, but two children’s books. They were shocked, however, to find out Carla had dedicated one of her books to them in her book “The Wombaloo”. An excerpt from the acknowledgement reads:
“I’d like to express my everlasting gratitude to the Instructors in Early Childhood Education at the Sprott-Shaw Community College in New Westminster, BC who encouraged me to push forward with my work in children literature, and express these talents. Without them I would never have started, and I’ll always remember their kindness.”
You can purchase her first book, “Maulie’s Pocket” on Amazon.com today, and you can sign up to be notified when “The Wombaloo” will be available for order.
Congratulations Carla, and all the best in the future!

“I am thankful to all of the teachers and staff at Sprott-Shaw.”
I have been in Canada for almost two years. I just finished my courses in Sprott-Shaw at the end of May and I got a job one week after! Now I am working in Real Estate Corporation as a marketing assistant. My supervisor is a Western Canadian who can really help me improve my English skills. My favourite course in Sprott-Shaw was Marketing because I like business planning and company structure organization. I believe I am becoming more efficient using what I have learned from school. I am thankful to all of the teachers and staff at Sprott-Shaw.

“SSCC indeed helped me start my career at the right place.”
I have taken ITBM at Sprott-Shaw and had a really great practicum opportunity. It was a leading freight forwarder and the work environment was very comfortable as well. The was job was closely related to what I had learned at school. It was a great chance to learn how to apply theories that I had learned to real business. After all, Sprott-Shaw program was very practical that it shortened the time to get used to the job. Eventually, it gave me more time to observe the business on how it is done. I am very thankful for what has been taught in a very efficient way. SSCC indeed helped me start my career at the right place.

“I am grateful for the opportunity Sprott-Shaw has given me.”
I started at Sprott-Shaw Community College in January 2010 in hopes to just find a job at the end of it. Little did I know I found a whole lot more. Sprott Shaw has been my home for the past year. The people I met have become a family to me and Sprott-Shaw started my career by hiring me as their staff. I am grateful for the opportunity Sprott-Shaw has given me.

“Thank you very much my success is largely due to my professors and staff guidance.”
After finishing my English courses in Vancouver, I decided to go to Sprott-Shaw College to upgrade my business skills. I found here the best professors who always gave me constructive feedback and found areas for me to improve on. At the end of my courses I went on my internship to practice the skills I got from school. It was a wonderful experience and in my last week the company decided to hire me!! Now I have a great job as a Book Keeper/Office Manager. Thank you very much my success is largely due to my professors and staff guidance.
