ECE Basic and Post-Basic expanding!

Sprott-Shaw Community College has announced that our Early Childhood Education Basic program will now be available in Abbotsford and Early Childhood Eduction Post-Basic program will now be available in Surrey.

Early childhood educators develop daily activities for children. They lead children in activities by telling or reading stories, teaching songs, demonstrating the use of simple musical instruments, preparing craft materials and demonstrating their use, and taking the children to local points of interest. They guide and assist children in the development of proper eating, dressing and toilet habits. They also observe children and discuss, when appropriate, children’s progress or problems with parents and other staff members. They attend meetings and workshops to develop and discuss new teaching methods. They may supervise and coordinate the activities of other early childhood educators and early childhood educator assistants.

Federal government plans to increase accessibility of licensed child care may have a significant and positive effect on employment growth. The federal plan is to increase the number of regulated spaces significantly over the next several years and to increase their affordability through federal financial support. If this initiative comes into effect, there will be a notable shortage of trained professionals needed to staff these new spaces. It is also likely that this infusion of money could increase average salaries.

To register for the ECE Basic or ECE Post-Basic program call 310-HIRE (4473) or use our contact form.

The Benefits of Enrolling in a Community College

If you were to describe the perfect college, then you’d include small class sizes, experienced professors, and high-paying job placement once you’ve earned your degree. This type of school isn’t a private university; it’s your local community college.

There are a number of personal and financial benefits of attending a community college, but here are just a few for you to consider.

  • Reduced Tuition. Most colleges and universities charge tens of thousands of dollars per semester. When you compound that amount over four years to earn your degree, you could be looking at a total educational cost over $100,000. However, the tuition and fees at a community college average less than half of those at public four-year colleges and almost one-tenth of private universities’.
  • Convenience. Most community college campuses are in the hearts of towns and cities, meaning you have access to affordable public transportation and the option to live at home. In addition to reduced tuition expenses, the money you will save on transportation and boarding alone makes community colleges a smart choice.
  • Choice. Community colleges offer a number of vocational programs for specialties in particular fields without unnecessary or unrelated course work. Some examples of these programs include practical nursing and business administration. With sponsored industry outreach programs, you could find yourself employed right after graduation!
  • Community. These schools are called “community” colleges for a reason. Unlike private four-year colleges and universities, community colleges offer a much more intimate setting that fosters lasting and meaningful relationships with your professors and peers. The community support workers on staff are dedicated to reaching out to students and offering the services, resources, and support they need.

Becoming a nurse can be demanding. In addition to your course work, you have a job and personal issues to deal with. How can you keep it all straight?

In this short video, Nurse Dan Carlson gives us a few study tips for aspiring nurses. The most important thing, he says, is to get organized—that way you know where everything is when you need it. He also advises studying a little bit every day rather than cramming all at once, finding a study group, and avoiding procrastination.

If you’re not yet enrolled in a healthcare career program but would like to be, then check us out at Sprott-Shaw Community College. We offer fantastic programs in practical nursing and healthcare assisting, as well as business, law, and much more. Enroll today, and the first life you save could be your own.

Dear Mr. Lineham,

Your excellent teaching skills and courteous personality has helped me tremendously through my journey at Sprott-Shaw Community College.

Without your helpfulness and directness, school would have been more challenging. I appreciate you being stern and letting me know what I am doing wrong along with giving my ways I can correct my mistakes. It is comforting to know that whenever I have a question you answer right away, which you know is all the time. I like that you refer to your personal work-related situations as examples when teaching a lesson along with regular course outline.

Sprott-Shaw

I have learned so much from you and I look forward to learning more. Thank you for being a remarkable teacher and I am very grateful to have you as a teacher.

Sincerely,

Nicole D.

The practical and life skills that I learned during my studies at Sprott-Shaw Community College are invaluable

My name is Brandy Schlemko; a former student and graduate of Sprott-Shaw Community College.  I would like to share with you my experience at Sprott-Shaw, as well as some of the trials and tribulations I conquered leading up to my success.

I am a single mother of two, a high school drop out with a Grade 12 equivalency and no formal post secondary education.  I have been working on and off at a countless number of dead end jobs, struggling to hold down any sort of steady employment to make ends meet. I moved around a lot and my past has been – well let’s just call it “checkered”, to say the least.

When I first enrolled at Sprott-Shaw Community College, it was for all of the wrong reasons.  I was depressed, feeling hopeless and unsettled. I never actually had any intention of completing the course. I almost quit on a dozen occasions. I balled my eyes out and vented in the Director’s office at least three times. I was miserable. I complained and fought through every day of attendance. I’m surprised the teachers even put up with me for so long.

When I started my course I was completely computer illiterate and felt very overwhelmed, but as time went by, I got used to getting up early and learning to meet deadlines for assignments. I was seeing the positive reactions from teachers and fellow students to some of my work. I began to feel a sense of accomplishment and for the first time, I saw the glimmer of hope for an actual future.

I graduated with nothing less than a “B” and managed to achieve a 3.75 GPA. The biggest obstacle that I had to face and learn to overcome was myself. One day, through all of this, I had to make the decision to retrain my pessimistic way of thinking into positivity and optimism. I had to take a long hard look in the mirror and decide what I wanted out of life. I learned to believe in myself and realised that the way I viewed myself was exactly how others would in turn view me.

I sent out about 25 online applications in two weeks. With my education and new skills inventory, I managed to receive 8 requests for interviews for various positions in my field of study. I was offered the position for nearly every interview. I was able to pick and chose the right fit for me.

I am now the Marketing Director for the Vancouver Night Life Magazine. I am responsible for maintaining and creating relationships, and writing proposals to clients and sponsors for our company. I am a Private Contractor and I am able to make my own schedule and eligible for any number of tax breaks and write offs.  I also work part time for Fitness world as Club Controller.  I am still receiving responses to my previous applications.

The practical and life skills that I learned during my studies at Sprott-Shaw Community College are invaluable. I intend to further my education and continue to work towards achieving my ultimate career goals. I could not have made it through this challenging experience without the help and support I received from my professors, the staff, and my peers at Sprott-Shaw. My journey has only just begun, but now I have a solid foundation and a clear vision of where I want to be and how I’m going to get there.

Sincerely,

Brandy Schlemko;
Sprott-Shaw Graduate of 2010

By this time next year I will have reached my goal and be working as a nurse

Twenty-two years ago I decided to go back to school. Yep, you heard me. I was seventeen with a grade 10 education and a baby on the way.

I always knew I wanted a career, but with an unplanned pregnancy my plans for college had to wait until the time was right. So, I committed to being a mom and I promised myself that once my child was an adult that I would reach my goal, go to college and have the career that I always wanted.

And so, here I am. I have just completed my first semester of the Practical Nursing Program and I am loving it. But getting here wasn’t easy. I went back to high school after I had my son and got my Dogwood diploma. About 6 years ago I started upgrading my high school sciences.

It wasn’t easy – nothing really worth it ever is! I was a divorced mother with two children, two jobs and a goal.

I know my children are proud of me. They saw me crying on the couch when the stress of it all seemed to be too much to take and encouraged me to keep going. And I believe that they learned a valuable lesson right along with me – only you can make your dreams come true. And since you are reading this I assume that you have a dream too.

Through the Practical Nurse program, I have discovered so many new friends, support systems and most of all a sense of pride in myself for keeping the promise I made over two decades ago. By this time next year I will have reached my goal and be working as a nurse.

Good luck on your journey – it is worth it!
